February 3, 2013

Jay Strother · Matthew 5:33-48

As Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount, it became increasingly evident that He believed it matters greatly how His followers relate to people around them. Why must a true believer’s righteousness go deeper than mere outward appearances? How is this possible? In all three examples today, Jesus points to false interpretations of Old Testament laws (Exodus 21:24, Leviticus 19:12, Numbers 30:20). How did Jesus’ interpretations differ? How did each raise expectations for His followers? What’s the most surprising to you about the expectations Jesus sets for His followers? Which is the most challenging for you to live out? Which of these qualities do you want to cultivate the most right now? How would your life be different as God helps you put this quality into action?
